Due to its high level of maturity and saturation, as well as general competition with tap water, cold teas, juices and carbonates, year-on-year bottled water sales are expected to remain stagnant with opposing tendencies within different product groups. Still bottled water is expected to record the best retail volume and value performance, with sparkling waters expecting further minimal declines.
Currently, leading manufacturers are dominating the landscape, with Vöslauer and Coca-Cola expected to maintain their strong leading positions over the forecast period. This is due to their wide product portfolios, high level of brand recognition and strong availability.
Growing demands for more sustainable, environment-friendly solutions, as well as waste reduction, additionally limits demand in water bottles for on-the-go consumption, with consumers increasingly using refillable water bottles for their away-from-home hydration needs. This is challenging retail sales of bottled water, as consumers increasingly remember to take refillable bottles out and about.

Bottled Water
This category is the aggregation of still bottled water (spring, mineral & purified), carbonated bottled water (spring, mineral & purified), flavoured bottled water and functional bottled water. Bulk bottled water is split out separately. It is defined as packaged drinking water – purified, spring or mineral – that is packaged in a container of 8 litres or larger. The bulk bottled water data types apply to Still Bottled Water and Carbonated Bottled Water but do not apply to functional or flavoured bottled water. Bulk water is classified according to the new Bulk retail volume and Bulk retail value data type regardless of channel of sale: bulk water sold via retail locations and bulk water delivered direct to a consumer’s home is included. Bulk water sold to institutions (offices, schools etc.) remains excluded.
