Juice in Mexico
January 2022
2021 DEVELOPMENTS
Sales of juice negatively affected by the new labelling regulation
In October 2020, new labelling regulation came into force that required a black seal be added to those products with excessive amounts of sugar, fat, and sodium amongst other unhealthy ingredients. In addition, those drinks containing artificial sweeteners now have a black seal with the words ‘contains artificial sweeteners.
COVID-19 measures continue to influence sales
Due to the ongoing challenges faced in preventing the spread of COVID-19, Mexico continued to employ preventive measures in 2021 such as restrictions to mobility, home schooling and working from home for many that were able to do so. This had a negative impact on some areas of juice.
Little change in the competitive landscape despite increased interest in private label
Private label saw growing interest in 2020 as consumers traded down to more affordable products in order to make savings. The difficult economic situation together with uncertainty and concerns about the speed of its recovery have resulted in cautious spending which continued to benefit private label in 2021.
PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
100% juice set to expand due to rising health concerns
A key focus of new product development and marketing within juice is likely to rest on promoting the healthy qualities of these products. The COVID-19 pandemic has made a healthy and functioning immune system one of the main priorities of consumers and as such juice producers are likely to home in on this with products packed with ingredients rich in vitamins, zinc, iron and protein.
Easing of COVID-19 measures set to drive demand for juice
The closure of schools and universities and the shift to work-from-home arrangements limited the growth of juice in retail volume terms in 2021. However, over the forecast period COVID-19 measures are expected to slowly disappear thanks to the rolling out of vaccines with this being expected to help drive the growth of juice.
Health and nutrition expected to inform consumers’ purchasing decisions
Concerns about the nutrition provided by juice drinks (up to 24% juice) and nectars coupled with the high sugar content of some products is likely to encourage consumers to try alternatives such as plant-based beverages and dairy products in the future. To address this players could look to reformulate their products and even fortify them with vitamins and minerals.
