The longer-term negative off-trade volume sales trend for juice is expected to continue over the forecast period, due to the category’s overall maturity and consumers’ perception of juice as containing a high level of sugar. The growing presence of flavoured bottled water with fruit extracts, including functional bottled water, which contain less sugar than juice, is also likely to continue undermining juice’s growth prospects, and may lead to a gradual erosion of the category’s consumer base.
The shift towards locally sourced juice is expected to continue, with a growing preference among Swiss consumers for products sourced and processed domestically. This, in turn, is likely to shape manufacturers’ offers, notably through a focus on juice with apples and berries as the main fruits.
The intense pressure from private label is predicted to encourage juice brands to further differentiate their positioning through functional products, with health benefits including 100% multifruit juices with high vitamin content, as well as antioxidants and calcium. The demand for more sustainable juice is expected to continue rising, benefiting branded or private label products with third party certifications such as Fairtrade.

Juice
This category covers all still packaged juice obtained from fruits or vegetables by mechanical processes, reconstituted or fresh, often including pulp or fruit/vegetable puree. All unpackaged juices are excluded. Only still drinks are included here. Carbonated varieties are included non-cola carbonates. Juice-flavoured milk drinks and fruit shakes which are primarily milk are excluded–these are instead tracked in Packaged Foods Dairy. However, if the juice component is greater, the product is to be excluded from Packaged Foods Dairy coverage and tracked under the relevant category (based on % juice content) within Soft Drinks juice. This sector is the aggregation of 100% juice, nectars (25-99% juice content), juice drinks (up to 24% juice content), and coconut & other plant waters.
