Juice in Finland
January 2022
2021 DEVELOPMENTS
Declining trend for juice persists as consumers avoid expensive, sugary soft drinks
Juice in Finland continues to decline in 2021 due to the maturity of the category. Aside from the effects of the pandemic, demand has been impacted by the soft drink tax that was implemented at the beginning of 2020.
Ginger, smoothie, and organic trends support interest in certain juice drinks
Ginger is one of biggest trends in juice in Finland in 2021. Starting around 2017, the trend has recently intensified given the immunity-boosting qualities associated with the ingredient.
Criticism of soft drinks tax unlikely to lead to relaxation
The increase in the soft drinks tax in 2020 caused prices of juice products in Finland to increase by around 5% in 2020 and 3% in 2021. This tax has been widely criticised since its introduction because, even though it was originally designed to encourage the population to cut back on consumption of sugary beverages, its effects have fallen on other categories of soft drinks as well, including bottled water.
PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Increasing prices and high sugar content will continue to threaten sales of juice
Total volume growth in juice in Finland is expected to continue to be sluggish over the next few years as the maturity of the category continues to impede growth. Although juice was less impacted by the pandemic than most other soft drinks categories, many of the major volume categories are nevertheless on a declining trend, with this unlikely to change soon.
Consumers to continue to demand more value for their money
The demand for value added products is expected to keep increasing over the forecast period as consumers demand more for their money. This, together with increasing prices, is set to boost the value growth of the category.
Smoothies are increasingly visible and attracting more interest via constant new flavour combinations
Smoothies are becoming more visible in the off-trade channel with a wider array of increasingly interesting flavour combinations - this trend is set to continue across the forecast period. Among the new smoothie products that have recently appeared in Finland are Pago’s Mango-Coconut, Chili-Carrot-Mango & Ginger, and Cherry-Blackcurrant & Rose flavours.
