Demand for wine is quite limited in Nigeria (particularly in comparison to beer), but it is rising rapidly. In contrast to beer, the off-trade dominates volume sales of wine.
With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, the on-trade significantly outperformed the off-trade in spirits during 2021. On-trade volume sales surged past their pre-pandemic level during the year, in spite of the fact that some restrictions remained in place, such as a curfew in some major cities from 12am to 4am, in addition to the lingering economic impact of COVID-19.
Ekulo Group of Cos continued to lead in total volume and value sales of wine in 2021. As the major importing company for wine in Nigeria, it holds the franchise or distribution rights for major brands in the market, such as Baron Romero, Baron de Valls, B&G Cuvee Speciale, Don Simón, Moët & Chandon and Escudo Rojo.
Off-trade and particularly on-trade volume sales of wine will expand at a robust pace throughout the forecast period. This growth will be supported by strong population growth and urbanisation, in addition to a post-pandemic economic recovery.
Still red wine will remain the main driver of growth, as it is generally more affordable than other types of wine and has a much wider product offer. Still red wine is generally cheaper than white and rosé varieties, and many consumers are introduced to wine through the low-priced Don Simón and Baron de Valls still red wine brands.
Off-trade volume sales of champagne remained below their pre-pandemic level in 2021, but they will exhibit very strong growth during the forecast period – albeit from a very low base. As in most of the rest of the world, champagne is regarded as a status symbol in Nigeria and is often consumed conspicuously.
