Demand for sake has significantly increased in Singapore, with the pandemic leading to a boom in alcoholic drinks, including wine such as sake. Since the popularity of Japanese food and drink was already surging in Singapore prior to the emergence of the pandemic, sales exports by value and unit price have been increasing.
Since the emergence of the pandemic, technology has played an increasingly crucial role in consumers’ daily lives. For example, e-commerce has continued to gain growth momentum, creating opportunities for the end consumer to be closer to producers.
Wine producers have faced numerous challenges as a result of the pandemic, including labour shortages. Other major factors were linked to the rising cost of goods and shipping caused by rising fuel prices, in addition to restrictions on shipments and imports due to border closures resulting in container ships being stuck in ports.
Sustainability is now trending globally across every industry, including wine. As consumers become increasingly conscious of their health, there is an inclination to consider healthier and more sustainable options.
Since Singapore’s border has been lifted for tourists from certain countries and with the further relaxation of restrictions, the greater return of inbound tourists will help to drive up stronger sales of wine through on-trade from 2022, including for sparkling wine and sake. Singapore is also a country where a wide variety of local and imported wine is available, and as larger gatherings are now permitted, consumers are likely to socialise more regularly due to pent-up demand, including for special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, graduation parties.
Non/low alcohol, including wine, has been gaining visibility and popularity on a global level in line with rising health and wellness trends. Increasing numbers of consumers are willing to pay more for high-quality non/low alcohol that does not compromise on flavour.
