Wine consumption increased during the pandemic, with double-digit volume growth in both 2020 and 2021. While Costa Ricans are not accustomed to having wine with every meal, the frequency with which wine is being consumed is increasing.
The increased demand for wine has led to an increased variety of wines offered by retailers, with often particular retailers specialising in a particular region. For example, the Discount Italian Store, which opened in 2020, offers a variety of Italian wines, while Bottega has a large concentration of both French and Italian wines.
While organic wine is still niche in Costa, it has gained value share. Consumers with sulphite allergies in particular favour organic wines.
Wine is expected to register healthy volume growth over the forecast period. Wine culture is expected to continue growing in Costa Rica, with consumers becoming more knowledgeable about their wines and more interested in trying different varieties.
Centenario Internacional is mainly known as a distiller and is one of the top players in spirits sales. However, since 2020, the company has been adding wine brands to its portfolio and in a short space of time has been very successful and offers a large range of wines across all price points.
There is a growing number of local wineries that offer different varieties of wine and while sales from these local wines are limited, it is expected to increase over the forecast period, as local industry looks to capitalise on Costa Ricans increasing interest in wine. For instance, the local winery Copey de Dota winery is expanding its production and aims to produce 100,000 bottles per year.
