Off-trade volume sales of carbonates in 2020 will be boosted by COVID-19. There was a clear shift from on-trade to off-trade, as most consumers spent more time at home due to the closure of schools and workplaces and other restrictions.
Demand continues to shift from regular cola carbonates to low calorie cola carbonates, with the latter set outsell the former by two-to-one in terms of off-trade volume sales during 2020. Increased consumer concern regarding the health risks associated with sugar consumption remains the main driver of this trend.
Carbonates remains highly concentrated, with Coca-Cola European Partners Norge AS and Ringnes AS accounting for more than three quarters of off-trade volume sales between them.
