Executive Summary

Mar 2019
PROSPECTS
Carbonates are decreasingly popular due to their unhealthy ingredients

Consumer interest in carbonates was in decline in 2018, as they looked for beverages with less sugar content, in line with the health and wellness trend. However, only a slight volume sales decline was recorded by carbonates, while sales increased slightly in value.

Cola carbonates are losing popularity among Slovak consumers

The trend of rising popularity of healthy beverages, with reduced sugar and with functional content, had the strongest negative impact on sales of cola carbonates. Cola carbonates tends to see the strongest marketing activities by manufacturers, and remain popular, especially among younger consumers.

New product developments in non-cola carbonates appear

A slightly better volume performance was seen by non-cola carbonates compared to cola carbonates in 2018. Product innovations in terms of new flavours and strong promotions of new products were seen in other non-cola carbonates, such as lemonade/lime, attracting consumers.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
The Coca-Cola brand leads value sales

The leading position in carbonates is held by Coca-Cola HBC Slovakia, with its main brand, Coca-Cola, being highly popular among consumers. Slovaks know the brand very well, as it globally renowned and benefits from strong marketing activities.

Kofola is closely followed by Pepsi-Cola SR

Kofola follows Coca-Cola HBC Slovakia, offering several brands in carbonates. The Czech producer focuses on frequent innovation in its product portfolio, and offers a wide variety of products in both the on-trade and off-trade.

Main product innovations are launched by Kofola and Pepsi-Cola

Strong product developments were launched by the Kofola and Pepsi-Cola in 2018. Kofola introduced the new Vinea Frizzante, with a higher grape content than other Vinea products, and it does not contain any artificial colourants or sweeteners.
