During 2021, carbonates unit price increases were largely suppressed, driven by the high volumes of bulk specials and lower annual unit price increases compared with earlier in the review period. Then in 2022, carbonates input costs begun to rise sharply, as evident from the Soft Drinks Consumer Price Index (CPI), which increased month-on-month during the review period.
Several manufacturers are actively looking at ways to cut their operational expenses through the medium to long term, by gearing their production lines to be more self-sustainable. Part of this is a direct result of the high inflationary environment globally at present, meaning any way in which input costs can be reduced, manufacturers will attempt to do so, including through sustainable practices.

Sweetened, non-alcoholic drinks containing carbon dioxide are included here. All carbonated products containing fruit juice (“sparkling juices”) are included here, unless they are tea-based (these are included in carbonated RTD tea) or carbonated Energy drinks, which are included in Energy Drinks. Carbonated bottled water is also excluded. Carbonates are an aggregation of cola carbonates and non-cola carbonates, whether regular or low calorie. Euromonitor International includes both naturally and artificially-sweetened carbonates.
