While consumers previously favoured plain cola, 2022 marked the return of flavoured cola, with Coca-Cola seeing increased interest in Cherry Coke, Coca-Cola Lemon in regular and zero variants, and Coca-Cola Ginger. Basic flavours will continue to trend in the coming years, but those with a twist are expected to increase in popularity too, boosting product development in this area.
The polarisation of packaging sizes in carbonates is likely to continue across the forecast period.
According to the Hungarian Soft Drinks Association, Hungary has made headway in its effort to reduce sugar in carbonates in the last decade, thanks to changes in formulas, reducing sugar to less than 8g per litre (below the health tax limit) and adding sweeteners. Not all lower sugar carbonates were positioned as reduced sugar, however, and most remained in the regular category.
