Carbonates in Ukraine
January 2022
2021 DEVELOPMENTS
Supply disruption sees Coca-Cola overtaken by PepsiCo
During 2021, PepsiCo Ukraine Ltd overtook Coca-Cola Beverages Ukraine Ltd to lead in carbonates. All Coca-Cola brands were absent from retail chain ATB-Market for an extended period during the year, with the latter launching private label offerings The Cola, The Lemon and The Orange in carbonates.
As pandemic economic shock eases, off-trade growth accelerates
Having dipped during 2020 as a result of the economic shock of the pandemic, the rate of growth in retail volume sales of off-trade carbonates accelerated sharply in 2021. Demand continued to be driven by the health and wellness trend and new taste developments in this category offered by major players like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, which have concentrated their product innovations around flavoured, low-calorie carbonates, such as Coca-Cola Zero Vanilla and Coca-Cola Zero Lemon, Pepsi Lime and Pepsi Ginger with reduced sugar content.
Brand loyalty remains limited
Brand loyalty in carbonated drinks remains rather low in Ukraine, as consumers continue to display a notable price sensitivity. Nevertheless, there is no significant pressure from the low-price segment, because of frequent promotional sales of the most popular and more expensive options, such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi.
PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
On-trade recovery will begin to lose steam
The rate of growth in off-trade volume sales of carbonates will gradually decelerate over the course of the forecast period. Ongoing economic uncertainty and a declining population will contribute to this.
Health and wellness will remain a significant growth driver
Low calorie cola carbonates will remain a strong performer, as the health and wellness trend is set to outlast the pandemic, while the product offer in this segment will continue to broaden. Coca-Cola has been particularly active in this regard, launching the energy-boosting Coca-Cola Coffee and Fanta with vitamin C, for example.
Premium offerings with unusual flavours will proliferate
Premium products will proliferate in carbonates during the forecast period. These will include craft lemonades with unusual flavours and nostalgic flavours like the tarragon-based Tarkhun.
