Over the forecast period, there is likely to be increasing competition between different categories of soft drinks in Germany. One trend to have emerged in recent years, which is likely to continue, is the shift towards still beverages such as still bottled water or RTD tea or only lightly carbonated soft drinks.
Beyond price, the main driving purchasing factor behind many consumers’ choice of soft drinks is taste. Although there are several factors that lead to purchasing decisions such as promotions, or popular and exotic flavours, there is another factor that is growing in importance.
As COVID-19 remains an uncertainty with potential new variants emerging during the winter season and threatening public health, restrictions could once again be introduced to the on-trade channel, or even discourage local consumers from spending time outside of the home due to fears of contagion. However, there are other risks that could hinder a quicker recovery of on-trade volume sales for carbonates heading into 2023.
