In 2021, growth in the retail sales of laundry care stabilised as the country moved towards a period of normalisation. A significant driver of growth in 2020 was the widespread stockpiling seen, but as consumers adjusted to COVID-19 this stockpiling subsided and, as such, was less of a feature in 2021.
Liquid tablet detergents remained one of the most dynamic categories in 2021, despite the higher unit price of these products. Consumers have shown a growing appreciation of the convenience of these products and their ability to provide the correct dosage.
Canadian laundry care continued to be dominated by US-based multinational Procter & Gamble, with the company extending its lead in 2021. Its success is linked to the wide variety of products it offers across laundry care, as well as its constant innovations in tablets and boosters.
Over the forecast period, laundry aids, most notably scent boosters, should continue to see strong growth, as these products are helping to add value in what is a relatively mature category. As scent boosters have become more popular, they have established a stronger presence on retailers’ shelves, which in turn has helped raise awareness of these products.
Sustainability regained importance for Canadian consumers in 2021, after experiencing a pause in 2020 due to the search for efficacy. As pandemic-induced fears and worries subside, consumers again give importance to keeping not just their homes free of chemicals but also the planet.
Due to shortages during 2020, many Canadian consumers were forced to try private label laundry products. Even though in 2021 they went back to well-known brands as these were again available, we anticipate seeing an increase in demand for low-cost private label laundry care products in the forecast period, especially for brands like Costco’s Kirkland or Loblaw’s President’s Choice, as the rising inflation rate will place a downwards pressure on consumer purchasing power.
