COVID-19 has a slightly negative impact on laundry care in 2020, with all categories seeing smaller value growth figures than previous years (bar water softeners, which shows a very small percentage point increase). This is due to the slowing down of development in non-essential categories, such as laundry aids, along with weaker consumer spending power.
The strongest value growth in 2020 is still seen in detergent tablets (including liquid tablet detergents and concentrated detergents), albeit the fall from the stronger value sales seen in 2019 is notable. The ongoing growth of such products is attributed to the fact that they are relatively new in the country and are growing from a low base, along with still being limited to consumers in the largest cities, such as the capital city Tashkent.
The Procter & Gamble Co maintains its lead in laundry care in 2020 by a relatively small margin, which is assisted by the player growing its shares slightly. Second-placed Henkel Rus OOO also grows small shares in 2020, creeping closer to challenge the leader.
Sales look set to remain somewhat stilted over the short-term forecast period, although continuing to show healthy growth overall. Additionally, consumer purchasing patterns and producer developments are expected to return to regular patterns from 2021, as the uncertainty caused by COVID-19 decreases.
Traditional and standard powder variants are expected to remain the major choice of consumers in Uzbekistan over the forecast period, due to the historic and ongoing low purchasing power of the majority of consumers in the country. This traditional trend is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future due to the macroeconomic situation in the country, especially in more rural areas outside of the large towns.
Developments are, however, expected in more modern variants as producer patterns return to normality after the impacts of COVID-19. For example, within laundry aids and also in detergent tablets (including liquid tablet detergents and concentrated detergents), along with liquid detergents per se.
