Laundry care continued to see retail volume and current value growth in 2020, albeit with a strong deceleration from the previous year. Laundry care products are used by consumers from all income groups, especially the major contributor to sales, hand wash detergents, with the penetration rate of washing machines remaining in the single digits in the country.
Nonetheless, COVID-19 also made some consumers far more health-conscious. These people tended to wash their clothing, bed sheets, curtains and other items more frequently during the pandemic.
In 2020, grocery retailers remained the leading distribution channel for laundry care products in Indonesia. This can be attributed to the fact many consumers come from second- and third-tier cities, where traditional grocery retailers remain quite prominent and consumers are price-sensitive, thus buying products such as hand wash detergents.
In 2021, retail volume and current value growth rates in laundry care are expected to remain at a similar low level to those seen in 2020. Although COVID-19 vaccines have been developed which will reduce the incidence of the virus, distribution is likely to take a long time.
Over the forecast period as a whole, laundry care is set to enjoy respectable growth, with only slightly lower retail volume and current value CAGRs than those seen in the review period. In the forecast period manufacturers are expected to be more active in terms of introducing a variety of value-added benefits to laundry detergents, such as novel fragrances, skin-friendly ingredients, and anti-germ and colour protection properties.
The average unit price of laundry care products is expected to continue increasing in the forecast period in current terms. In addition to rising production costs and inflation, price increases will also be driven by the expected rising preference for value-added products.
