Measures to limit the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in North Macedonia are having little significant short-term impact on the performance of tobacco in 2020. Though non-essential retail outlets were forced to close during the initial period of lockdown, sales remain unaffected by the move in terms of volume, with tobacco products available in grocery outlets.
A state of emergency was introduced on 18 March as well as a complete closure of the country’s borders, including Skopje Airport and Ohrid Airport. Movement has been restricted since the introduction of the state of emergency in March, continuing throughout April and into the first half of May.
2019 saw a continued consumer shift away from cigarettes and towards fine cut tobacco, as well as growing interest in heated tobacco products. As prices across several product categories rose, cigarettes were hit particularly hard by regular tax increases and thus higher unit prices.
E-Vapour products benefited from the activity of leading player, Umbrella Corps, in 2019. The company introduced Umbrella HOKA, a disposable e-cigarette available in six different flavours, including strawberry, coffee and menthol.
Overall, the performance of tobacco during the forecast period is set to remain subject to the impact of several factors already in place. Most notably, the continued unit price rises in cigarettes due to regular tax hikes will further motivate smokers to either cut out tobacco and nicotine entirely or to shift towards lower-cost options.
