Tobacco in North Macedonia showed an improved performance in total current value sales terms in 2021, with growth moderately surpassing that recorded in 2020. This was mainly due to unit price increases resulting from changes in excise duty rates, as the dominant category of cigarettes continued to see volume sales contract in line with the well-established trend of decline in smoking prevalence among the population.
Despite the declining trend in smoking prevalence, cigars was one of the best performing areas of the tobacco market in 2021, with volume and current value sales increasing at high double-digit rates. This was partly explained by the fact that the number of cigar aficionados in the country has steadily increased over recent years thanks to the expansion and evolution of the local cigar-smoking culture.
Imperial Tobako remained the clear leader in cigarettes in retail volume sales terms in 2021, followed by British American Tobacco, Philip Morris International, Tutunski Kombinat Prilep and Japan Tobacco Inc. The volume shares of these companies remained largely stable, with British American Tobacco recording a marginal gain and Imperial Tobako witnessing a similarly small drop.
Independent small grocers remained the most important distribution channel for cigarettes in retail volume sales terms in 2021, followed by newsagent-tobacconists/kiosks and supermarkets. Tobacco specialists meanwhile continued to dominate distribution of cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco.
Key trends observed in 2021 will continue to shape the development of the tobacco market in North Macedonia over the forecast period. Retail volume sales of cigarettes are set to decline steadily as rising awareness of the health risks associated with smoking and further excise duty hikes lead more smokers to quit, cut down or switch to e-vapour and heated tobacco products, while also discouraging young people from taking up the habit in the first place.
