Despite the legal requirements of health warnings on packages and the ban on smoking in public places, the total number of adult cigarette smokers increased, while smoking prevalence was stable, in 2017/2018. Nonetheless, retail volume sales of cigarettes continued to decline in 2018 due to increasingly successful public health campaigns and a shift to alternatives like e-vapour and heated tobacco products.
Any contraction in the smoking population is most likely to have occurred among upper-income consumers, who tend to have higher levels of education and better understand the potential health risks of smoking. However, some more affluent consumers have switched to e-vapour products.
Tabacalera Centroamericana (Philip Morris International) and British American Tobacco Caribbean & Central America continued to dominate cigarettes in 2018, while also establishing a significant presence in e-vapour products with Iqos and Vype, respectively. Tabacalera Centroamericana’s main brands include Rubios, Marlboro and L&M, while British American Tobacco Caribbean & Central America offers Pall Mall, Belmont and Lucky Strike (rebranded from After Hours), among others.
Traditional channels, especially independent small grocers, lead tobacco due their dominance of cigarettes. Most cigarettes are sold in packs, but also illegally per unit, through mom-and-pop outlets, open markets and street vendors.
All tobacco categories are projected to see retail current value sales growth over the forecast period, mainly due to taxation and higher unit prices. However, cigarettes, which dominates the industry, is expected to see a further decline in retail volume sales.
