Slovakia continued to experience an improved economy at the end of the review period, leading to higher disposable incomes, which in turn resulted in higher consumption of tobacco products. This was despite a marginal decline in smoking prevalence amongst the adult population.
Tobacco players wanted to capitalise on the ongoing positive performance of tobacco in Slovakia towards the end of the review period, by launching new innovative products that would gain further attention from local consumers. Following the successful launch of heated tobacco products in 2017 with the entry of Philip Morris and its IQOS and HEETS brands, the multinational company introduced additional products to its tobacco heating devices line with IQOS 3 and IQOS 3 Multi, reducing the size of the holder and offering greater convenience.
Multinationals such as Philip Morris and Imperial Tobacco continued to dominate tobacco in Slovakia in 2018 due to their vast experience and significant budgets for research and investing in new product development. These companies have been present in tobacco for many years, allowing them to build stable positions.
Tobacco specialists and newsagent-tobacconists/kiosks were the two leading distribution channels for most tobacco categories as they are able to offer a selection of premium brands, which are not available in other channels such as modern grocery retailers. Although store-based retailing dominated sales of e-vapour products, internet retailing continued to gain ground due to its wide product availability and convenience that it offers consumers, especially amongst millennials.
Tobacco in Slovakia is expected to continue to record positive current value growth over the forecast period, with sales largely supported by an ongoing improvement in the economic climate. However, all traditional tobacco products are predicted to be negatively impacted somewhat by the phenomenal growth predicted for heated tobacco products, with cigarettes in particular set to decline, while cigars, cigarillos and smoking tobacco will record marginally slower retail volume growth compared to the review period.
