Ethiopia is one of the sub-Saharan countries that have relatively low rates of tobacco smoking. While Ethiopia’s expanding population and growing economy represent opportunities for tobacco, illicit trade, low incomes, limited brand availability and its tough new tobacco control law are expected to hinder its growth.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) publicised its concerns that tobacco smoking may increase both the chances of contracting COVID-19 and also the severity of the symptoms. However, this message has not been widely communicated in Ethiopia and as such many smokers are not aware of the added risk to their health.
On 10 April, the Ethiopian parliament approved a five month state of emergency, giving the authorities sweeping powers to help manage the threat of COVID-19. This included banning all cross-border movement, except for the flow of cargo and essential goods.
The social acceptance of cigarette smoking is growing in urban areas of Ethiopia, with the result being that retail volume sales of cigarettes are on the increase, particularly among urban males. Among older generations, attitudes towards public tobacco consumption remain negative.
In 2019, National Tobacco Enterprise Ethiopia SC added the Winston brand to its portfolio. The brand is currently available across different retail channels including street vendors and independent small grocers.
As part of its ongoing economic reform programme, the Ethiopian government is set to renovate the logistics sector. The government believes that the current high cost of logistics is undermining the country’s overall trade competitiveness.
