Even though skin care was able to sustain positive current value sales growth in 2021, largely driven by a rise in unit prices due to local currency devaluation, retail volume sales continued to decline in Georgia, albeit at a lower rate compared to 2020. During the year, skin care products continued to suffer from lower levels of demand.
Despite economic uncertainty ignited by COVID-19 and inflation, premium skin care products saw a stronger recovery in retail volume terms compared to mass offerings. This is in line with the trend observed towards the end of the review period which saw consumers increasingly trading up to better quality skin care with more advanced formulations that offer greater specific benefits.
In 2021, L’Oréal Groupe maintained its leading position in skin care. The company was able to maintain its leadership of facial care with its wide portfolio of innovative products, advanced formulations, and different price segments.
Skin care is set to post a stronger but still moderate rate of retail volume growth in 2022, before strengthening throughout the remainder of the forecast period. However, strengthening demand is predicted over the course of the forecast period as consumers gradually regain their confidence once they are more settled in the workplace and feel more financially secure.
In the forecast period, growing awareness and availability of skin care products will drive growth. Increasing competition between modern grocery retailers and chemists/pharmacies will lead to more promotions and discounts which will stimulate sales.
The forecast period is expected to see a higher portion of skin care sales through e-commerce. The lockdown was a breaking point for consumers as many of them switched to e-commerce and increased their consumption through online portals.
