Current value sales showed healthy growth in 2019 for skin care overall. This was mainly due to high inflation, however, with many consumers economising as a result in order to save money.
A combination of global and Russian brands, all owned by global heavyweights, led the sales of skin care in Uzbekistan in 2019. Gloriya Distribution, which represents L'Oréal Group’s medium priced Garnier and L'Oréal ranges nationally, remained the overall leader in skin care in value terms, while Ayven Trade, which represents Unilever’s economy brands Cherny Zhemchug and Chistaya Liniya remained in second place.
Facial care remained the major category in skin care in value terms and saw reasonable current value growth in 2019, although much of this can be attributed to general inflation. Demand in the category rose, mainly in mass basic moisturisers, as particularly younger women consumers became more aware of the importance of preventive skin care measures.
Value sales of skin care are now expected to decline by 4% in 2020 in 2019 constant value terms in light of the impact of COVID-19. This compares to an expected 1% rise forecast for 2020 during research conducted at the end of 2019 before the spread of COVID-19.
In Uzbekistan, volume sales are expected to shrink across the category in the immediate wake of COVID-19. With consumers cutting back spending on non-essential and higher-priced products, firming/anti-cellulite body care is expected to see the worst value decline at constant 2019 prices in 2020, while lip care and sets/kits will also be impacted by a non-essential positioning.
Despite a slowing down of value sales growth due to COVID-19 in 2019, skin care benefits from a strong association with health and overall wellness trends. Moisturisers and treatments, toners, and face masks are expected to see the best growth by the end of the forecast period.
