Skin care was less affected by the pandemic than other beauty and personal care products, as consumers for the main part continued their skin care regimes, even during the 2020 lockdowns. In 2021, current value growth was up on 2020, though volume growth was slightly lower.
The leading regional and global players BDF Costa Rica (Nivea, Eucerin), Corporación Belcorp de Costa Rica (L’Bel, Esika, Cyzone) and Unilever de Centroamérica (Pond’s, Dove), maintained their competitive advantage in skin care in Costa Rica during 2021. This was thanks to the strong performance of their mass brands, which reach a vast range of middle-income consumers across the country.
Even though specific hand creams in smaller formats did gain traction during the pandemic, most consumers use body cream for all purposes. For example, Nivea body cream 1000ml, Dove 1000ml, Lubriderm 946ml and Suave 945ml were formats sizes that showed growth as they provided savings and the whole family could also use the product.
Skin care will register muted constant value growth over the forecast period. Inflation could become an issue over the forecast period, as global factors such as rising energy prices and continuing supply constraints, dampen value and volume growth somewhat.
Consumers increasingly consider skin care to play an important role in the longer-term care of their appearance, and so skin care products will continue to register positive growth. Consumers will also be mindful of protecting the environment, particularly younger consumers, and this will influence further product development.
The key trend in skin care is likely to be the growing penetration of multi-benefit products. Many brands have already experimented with multi-benefit combinations, but this is becoming more ubiquitous, and consumers now expect this as standard in many products.
