Skin care continued to record healthy current value growth in 2021 as consumer demand remained solid in all key categories. Hand care continued to witness strong double-digit growth in 2021 as many Dutch consumers tried to combat dry skin caused by using higher levels of hand soap and sanitisers for hand hygiene.
The trend towards beauty and personal care products with natural ingredients is highly visible in the skin care category. Consumers often expect skin friendly products to have natural ingredients but this is not always the case.
After only a minimal increase in current sales value in 2020, demand for acne treatments picked up in 2021 as young people began to socialise again and were still keen to put their faces on show in pictures and during Zoom calls, as has now become more customary since the COVID-19 pandemic. During the first phase of the pandemic consumers spent a lot of time at home and there were very few events and opportunities to go out, which curbed growth of acne treatments.
Skin care will see robust value growth over forecast period with all categories expected to witness positive growth although some categories will see very minimal growth, such as skin care sets/kits and liquid/cream/gel/bar cleansers. There will be a shift back towards premium face masks and premium hand care as more consumers include them in their skin care regimes.
The expectation is that hygiene in general and hand hygiene in particular will remain a major theme within the total beauty and personal care category. Over the forecast period this means that within skin care, hand care is likely to see the highest value growth rate.
Another area of strong value growth will be anti-agers, which suffered a decline in current value sales in 2020. Anti-agers is already well developed but still has plenty of growth potential.
