Skin care saw strong growth in current value and retail volume in 2021 following a sharp decline in 2020 brought forth by the pandemic. A resurgence in going out of the home and wearing colour cosmetics underpinned demand for skin care as Danes returned to normal skin care regimes of removing make up and applying facial products.
Skin care e-commerce continued to see strong current value growth in 2021 as the country was still impacted by the pandemic. A new wave of COVID-19 early in the year led to forced closures of department stores and shopping malls prompting consumers to switch to online shopping.
Skin care in Denmark remained consolidated in 2021 with the leading players, L'Oréal Danmark, Estée Lauder Cosmetics A/S and Beiersdorf A/S benefitting from strong retail and online distribution channels and well-known brands that are amongst those most trusted by Danish consumers. L'Oréal Danmark has ranked first in skin care throughout the review period due to its popular brands Biotherm, Lancôme, L'Oréal Dermo-Expertise and L'Oréal Paris.
Skin care is expected to continue its strong recovery in 2022, when it will return to pre-pandemic levels, but this positive trend will continue across the rest of the forecast period. Consumers are likely to continue focusing on health and hygiene over the forecast period to the benefit of all skin care product areas.
The growth in e-commerce is expected to endure over the forecast period as consumers continue to rely on this channel to seek out lower prices and more convenient delivery methods to buy skin care products. Online sales of skin care products are expected to continue growing in 2022 and for the rest of the forecast period, albeit at a slower pace than in 2020.
Danish retailers are expected to continue to focus on developing new and improved skin care private label ranges as part of a renewed strategy to capitalise on growing demand for skin care. Indeed, all of the major Danish retailers now have one or more private label skin care ranges and have made skin care a key focus category.
