The COVID-19 pandemic continued to have a positive impact on value and volume sales of skin care in 2021, with this being mainly driven by demand for dermocosmetics. With people spending more time at home since the start of the pandemic, they found themselves with more time to spend on their skin care routines and treatments.
L'Oréal retained a strong lead in skin care in 2021 with the company having increased its value share by three percentage points over the review period. During 2020 and 2021, the company’s growth was boosted by the strong performance of its premium and dermocosmetics brands such as Vichy, La Roche-Posay and CeraVe.
The dynamic growth seen in skin care in 2021 was in part explained by the rapid expansion of e-commerce since the start of the pandemic. E-commerce registered strong expansion in skin care in 2020 and 2021 in part because of leading chains of drugstores/parapharmacies such as San Roque and Farmashop having already invested in their e-commerce businesses prior to the start of the pandemic.
The interest in and demand for natural, vegan and organic skin care products is increasing year after year. Aside from concerns around animal welfare and the environment, Uruguayans are also becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of these products for their skin.
Direct selling registered a poor performance in skin care over the review period losing ground to e-commerce and other channels. The situation was exacerbated by the outbreak of COVID-19 which provided a big boost to e-commerce.
Uruguay’s borders remained closed until October 2021 with this having a positive impact on local sales of skin care, but especially premium brands which are usually bought in duty free shops where products are cheaper. Local retailers and brands ran regular promotions and discounts during the pandemic which also helped to boost local sales.
