Skin care was less affected by the pandemic than other beauty and personal care products, as consumers for the main part continued their skin care regimes, even during the 2020 lockdowns. In 2021, current value and volume growth was slightly up on 2020.
Local player Les Laboratoires Biopharma SA strengthened its leadership position in skin care during 2021, with a retail value share that was over twice as large as its closest rival – international player Beiersdorf. Les Laboratoires Biopharma has widened its distribution through modern grocery retailers, while at the same time maintaining its strong position in outdoor markets.
Despite controversy regarding the potentially dangerous ingredients contained in some skin lightening products, young urban females continue to trust popular brands, which claim to lighten skin in 48-72 hours. Les Laboratoires Biopharma markets a range of skin lightening products that are popular among women with dark complexions, with Rapid Clair being the best seller.
Skin care will register moderate constant value growth over the forecast period. Consumers increasingly consider skin care to play an important role in the longer-term care of their appearance, and so skin care products will continue to register positive growth.
The controversy around skin lightening products has put the beauty of black skin into focus and many consumers will increasingly adopt a back-to-basics regime and there will be an increase in demand for organic skin care products that contain safe, natural ingredients. The leading local player in organic skin care is Madlyn Cazalis and the company should benefit from this shift.
Currently, many of the skin care products on offer in Cameroon are imported. However, that could change over the forecast period.
