While 2021 saw the performance of sun care improve on the previous year, growth remained lower than that seen before the pandemic in both volume and value terms. The COVID-19 crisis continued to have a marked negative impact across a wide range of product areas, including sun care.
It will take a couple of years for sun care to return to the rates of growth seen prior to the outbreak of COVID-19. Even though vaccination programmes have started, Indonesia is one of the most populous countries in the world, and there are still many who are still not yet vaccinated or are afraid to be vaccinated.
Relying on its long-standing presence in the market and strong brand image, Nivea Sun from Beiersdorf continued to lead sun care in 2021. This brand remains popular as its products are affordable and have a wide distribution reach including modern grocery retailers, drugstores/parapharmacies and e-commerce.
Sun care products growth is driven by sun protection products. Baby sun care is responsible for a very marginal proportion of the total industry because parents are usually reluctant to place extra or unnecessary chemicals on their children’s skin.
There are a few factors that are likely to support sun care growth during the forecast period. Firstly, Indonesian consumers, and especially the female population, are quite obsessed with having fair skin and are, therefore, afraid of getting dark.
General purpose body care and facial moisturisers containing SPF will continue to pose competition to overall sun care over the forecast period, with these products not only carrying more affordable prices but also viewed by many as more comfortable than sun protection, which can be sticky or greasy, particularly in Indonesia’s hot and humid climate. Within sun protection, spray, serum and essence formats have thus become increasingly popular due to offering a more comfortable texture with no stickiness.
