Sun care products saw a strong rise in current value sales in 2021 as the COVID-19 pandemic receded. Since sales of these products result from consumers spending time in the sun, either abroad or at home, a shift back to some international travel and a warm Nordic summer, boosted sales of sun care products.
While consumers are becoming more aware of the need for sun care, sales are constrained by the inclusion of SPF in many everyday skin care and make-up products. To add value, most of the leading brands in these areas now also include SPF, and many consumers do not feel the need to use additional sun care, especially when some of these products leave a greasy residue on the skin.
In order to stay competitive, premium companies are packing a variety of superior qualities into sun care products to differentiate and capture consumer interest. In 2021, Clarins renewed its Clarins UV PLUS Sun Care which enhances the skin's own protection mechanism and helps to protect the skin from UV rays.
Sun care is expected to see strong value growth in 2022 and for the rest of the forecast period. Finns will resume regular travel patterns in 2022 creating robust demand for sun care protection.
Finns will increasingly pay attention to more specific product qualities such as the levels of minerals in a product versus chemical sun protection. It is widely known that mineral sun protection contains more natural ingredients such as zinc, which are better for the environment as well as being more hypoallergenic.
E-commerce sales witnessed another strong year of growth in 2021 continuing the trend seen over the review period. As an established channel with mass appeal, Finns are now very open to purchasing sun care products online, which will bolster e-commerce sales over the forecast period.
