Sun care was boosted in 2019 by efforts to increase consumer awareness of the need to use sun protection products on a daily basis. Both the mass media and specialised cosmetics portals wrote extensively about the need to protect skin from the damaging rays of the sun not only during the summer months but at all times of the year.
Drugstores/parapharmacies, chemists/pharmacies, supermarkets and hypermarkets all recorded current value increases in their sales of sun care products in 2019 while traditional grocery retailers remained largely flat in terms of value share. This reflected the inclusion of sun care in the wider modernisation trend underway in retail in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Private label recorded one of the strongest rates of current value growth in 2019, with dm-Drogerie Markt’s Sun Dance brand present in both adult sun care and baby and child-specific sun care. This was due to consumers’ growing trust in the quality of private label products in general but more specifically to the continued expansion of dm-Drogerie Markt as the only retailer with a notable value share in sun care.
Sales of sun care are now expected to decline by 20% in 2020 in 2019 constant value terms in light of the impact of COVID-19. This compares to an expected 5% rise forecast for 2020 during research conducted at the end of 2019 before the spread of COVID-19.
All areas of sun care are expected to see large double-digit falls in both retail volume and value growth at constant 2019 prices in 2020, due to the impact of COVID-19. Aftersun is expected to be the worst-hit area due to its perception as a non-essential product while the frequency of using sun protection products will be impacted by consumers spending less time in the sun.
All areas of sun care are expected to return to growth from 2021 as consumers begin to spend more time away from home. Retail volume sales are expected to return or be close to 2019 levels by the end of the forecast period.
