In 2019, sales of skin care and cosmetic products with UV protection were cutting into sun care sales. As consumer-awareness of the risks posed by UV rays continues to rise, a wider range of beauty products are including sun protection ingredients, with some consumers relying on these multifunctional products for their sun protection needs, limiting demand for pure sun care.
L'Oréal Canada’s portfolio of sun care brands, including Ombrelle, Lancôme Sôleil, La Roche-Posay and Biotherm, combined to seize first place in value terms in 2019. The Ombrelle brand provided momentum in the year; this brand is supported by its broad distribution channels and offers a full range of sun protection products.
Green and natural sun care products are gaining in popularity as part of the overall natural products trend in Canada. For example, Canadian company Green Beaver markets a line of all-natural mineral sunscreens.
In 2020, sales of sun care are now expected to decline by 3% in 2019 constant value terms, in light of the impact of COVID-19. This compares with a 0% growth rate forecast for 2020 during research conducted at the end of 2019 before the spread of COVID-19.
Premium sun protection, aftersun and self-tanning will underperform slightly in 2020 given the lockdown and associated travel restrictions. They will also be negatively affected by the closure of the non-essential stores that sell premium products, eg beauty specialist retailers.
Although the reopening of channels deemed non-essential will allow sales to normalise to some extent over 2020, ongoing travel restrictions, both domestic and international, will keep volume demand for sun care from returning to pre-COVID-19 levels. However, the products may benefit from consumers’ exposure to the sun on domestic holidays and from sitting in parks and gardens over the summer.
