Sun care saw a sharp drop in demand in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19 and the category saw only a muted recovery in 2021. The country remained closed to inbound tourism for most of the year which was a significant factor, with foreign tourists and travellers being key consumers of these products.
Despite sluggish growth new products continued to be launched in sun care in 2021, with this helping to generate some interest. For example, L'Oréal launched Kiehl’s Ultra-Light Daily UV Defence SPF 50 PA++++ with Anti-Pollution.
Baby and child-specific sun care was the least severely affected area within sun care in 2020 and it was the one category within sun care to see a full recovery to pre-COVID-19 sales levels in 2021 (in current value terms). Many modern parents, in particular those living in urban areas, were keen to continue using these products to provide protection for their children when outdoors.
Sun care is expected to see a steady recovery from 2022 onwards, with sales expected to receive a significant boost from the reopening of the country’s borders to inbound tourism. Many Thais will also be keen to resume their outdoor activities and holidays once it is safe to do so, providing a further boost to sales.
In terms of new product development producers of mass brands are expected to focus on adding new ingredients to their products as well as providing additional benefits to help them stand out from the competition. This pattern was already being observed at the end of the review period with new product launches such as Kodomo Baby Sunblock Lotion SPF30 (with anti-rash technology); Pigeon UV Baby Water Milk SPF15 PA++; Punara Natural & Mild Kids Sunscreen (100% organic); Enfant Organic Daily Protection Lotion; and Kindee Sunscreen Lotion.
Baby and child-specific sun care will likely be a focus of innovation, with new launches offering gentle formulas for sensitive skin, as well as tear-free and organic options which are free from fragrances, parabens and alcohol. New products are also likely to include additional ingredients such as vitamin E, mineral water and ceramide, for example.
