Having plunged by more than a fifth during 2020, retail constant value sales (2021 prices) of sun care rebounded during 2021 but remained well below their pre-pandemic level. During 2020, travel restrictions depressed the need or inclination to buy or use sun care products, as holidays remain the main consumption purpose for the category.
As lockdown and travel restrictions depressed the demand for sun care, some branded players tried to keep consumers engaged and maintain brand awareness through social media. For example, Edgewell Personal Care México advertised the potential use of Hawaiian Tropic sun care products at home alongside the message “You deserve a spa day at home”.
During 2020, lockdown and home seclusion also saw players increasingly to look online for sales. They invested in the development of e-commerce platforms and logistics to try to reach consumers, who were attracted by the convenience of ordering via this channel.
Retail constant value sales of sun care will expand at a dynamic pace throughout the forecast period, with a revival in tourism (both domestic and international) the main driver of this, as the threat posed by COVID-19 continues to wane and life begins to normalise. A growing interest in the anti-ageing properties of sun protection will be an additional growth driver.
With consumers becoming more aware of the health risks associated with sun exposure, more skin care products will offer sun protection. This will present a mounting threat to retail value sales of sun care during the forecast period.
Dermocosmetics is likely to remain the source of most innovation in sun care during the forecast period. New products are expected to include convenient application formats and different textures, as well as added-value benefits, such as Vichy Capital Soleil’s 3-in-1 innovation – mattifying, stain-resistant and anti-ageing properties.
