Sun care continued to see retail volume growth and even stronger current value growth in 2019. Rising awareness of the dangers of sun exposure has resulted in more parents understanding the need to protect their children’s skin against sun exposure.
Dermocosmetic brands remained the main players in terms of innovation in sun care in 2019, with the launch of improved formulations with value-added benefits, such as anti-pigmentation and sweat resistance, as well as convenient packaging, lighter textures or tinted versions. This helped dermocosmetic adult sun care to maintain double-digit current value growth in this year.
BDF México retook the lead in sun care in value terms in 2019, as it took over the Coppertone brand from Bayer, to add to its existing Nivea Sun brand. Both brands offer variants for children as well as adults.
Sun care is now expected to see a 4% decline in 2020 in 2019 constant value terms in light of the impact of COVID-19. This is significantly lower than the 3% growth forecast for 2020 during research conducted at the end of 2019 before the spread of COVID-19.
In 2020, both retail volume and current value sales are expected to decline in all sun care categories as a result of a slump in demand due to COVID-19. However, baby and child-specific sun care is expected to see the least negative impact, as parents who usually purchase such products for their children are likely to continue to prioritise this expenditure to protect their skin health.
Although most of the impact from COVID-19 is expected to be in 2020, it is expected that the effects on demand for sun care products will linger into 2021. Although growth is expected to return to all categories, the levels of growth are expected to be slower than seen in the review period.
