There is limited demand for sun care in Saudi Arabia, with mass sun protection accounting for the bulk of retail volume sales. While the local climate is very hot and the sun is strong – the Tropic of Cancer passes through the middle of the Kingdom – Saudis have traditionally worn long robes, which protect most of their bodies from the sun’s rays – limiting their need for sun care.
The government raised the rate of VAT from 5% to 15% in July 2020 which led to an increase in the price of sun care. This was part of a long-term plan by the government to reduce its dependence on the revenue generated by oil exports.
Beiersdorf AG’s Nivea brand – which is distributed by Al Naghi Co in Saudi Arabia – continued to lead in sun care in terms of retail value share, ahead of Bioderma and L’Oréal Middle East FZE’s Vichy. Nivea’s success in sun care is built on its broad product portfolio, wide distribution and significant investment in marketing.
The harsh weather conditions in Saudi Arabia are expected to support steady demand for sun care products over the forecast period. As consumers become increasingly informed about the potential dangers of sun exposure they are likely to become increasingly willing to invest in sun protection.
Dermocosmetic sun care products will likely continue to grow in popularity during the forecast period, as their distribution widens and consumer awareness of these products rises. Chemists/pharmacies can now be opened in modern grocery retail outlets provided they have a license, cover at least 25 square metres and have an independent checkout – a regulatory change that was introduced in April 2020.
Chemists/pharmacies, supermarkets and hypermarkets are likely to remain the key distribution channels for sun care products over the forecast period. These channels typically stock a wide variety of products and brands, while they also run regular promotions and loyalty programmes, which are a big pull for some consumers.
