In 2021, retail value sales of sun care recovered from the sizeable decline observed in the previous year when travel plans were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the rolling out of the COVID-19 vaccination programme in 2021 and international travel slowly returning, demand for sun care products grew.
As in many other product areas in beauty and personal care in Austria, vegan certified sun care products are growing in availability and popularity. Consumers in Austria are increasingly mindful of animal welfare, and opt for products that they know have been with ingredients that are ethically sourced.
Beiersdorf GmbH continued to lead in sun care in Austria in 2021, thanks to the popularity of its Nivea Sun brand. Apart from being a well-established and widely known brand, Nivea Sun is also perceived to be of higher quality than other mass sun care protection brands.
In 2021 travel still remained restricted largely to within the EU, with this placing a limit on demand for sun care. It is expected that international travel should see a significant recovery as from 2022 which should boost sales of sun care, with this being reflected in the more positive growth projections.
The main benefits associated with sun care are its ability to provide protection from sunburn and the harmful effects of the sun’s rays. However, more recent formulations now also contain other benefits such as anti-ageing and hypoallergenic, as well as moisturising or protecting from blue light from screens.
Premium sun care is likely to lean on the growing interest in dermocosmetics over the forecast period. In order to persuade consumers to pay more for their sun care they will need to be convinced of the added benefits of using premium sun care.
