Following a strong decline in 2020, sun care made a positive recovery in 2021 as pandemic restrictions subsided and consumers resumed normal life for bigger parts of the year. The resurgence of holiday travel during the summer months had a notable impact on sun care as domestic and international travel resumed, leading to an increased demand for sun care products and for sun protection products especially.
Private label ranges are driving the certification trend in sun care with most private label ranges such as Änglamark, Coop 365, Levevis and Matas carrying several certifications such as the Nordic Swan Label and the Asthma and Allergy Associations Blue Wreath. Some brands such as Derma and Avivir are already certified but more brands are expected to follow in order to satisfy growing consumer demand for safe and natural products.
E-commerce was the fastest growing distribution channel in 2021 as a new wave of COVID-19 infections at the start of the year led to closures of department stores and shopping malls. Online shopping has also become more entrenched in Danish culture due to the pandemic when so much time was spent at home and many stores were closed.
Sun care is expected to see solid growth, particularly at the start of the forecast period as consumers travel more internationally and take holidays to sunny locations. Demand will return to pre-pandemic levels in 2022 whilst value sales is expected to exceed 2019 levels in 2023.
Premium sun care products are expected to perform better that mass products in terms of current value growth over the forecast period. The Danish economy has continued to grow in 2021 and 2022 and is expected to remain steady through the forecast period.
As pandemic restrictions ebb away and Danish life returns to normality, many consumers will also return to in-store shopping, although it is forecasted that e-commerce will see much smaller growth rates over the forecast period. Many consumers will stick to their new online shopping habits created during the pandemic, which will lead to continued growth in the e-commerce channel at the expense of most other physical retail channels.
