Sun care saw a strong decline in both current value and retail volume terms as it was negatively impacted by COVID-19 on several fronts in 2020. The biggest negative impact was the fact that most Danes stayed in Denmark throughout 2020 and especially during the summer, which is usually when consumers buy sun protection before going to Southern Europe or other places for summer holidays.
Despite also declining in current value and retail volume terms, self-tanning performed better than other sun care categories in 2020. As consumers spent more time at home the desire to use self-tanners generally declined.
Sun care in Denmark continued to be dominated by Beiersdorf and L’Oréal in 2020 as these players market some of the most popular brands in Denmark including Nivea Sun and Garnier Ambre Solaire. Beiersdorf remained the leading player in sun care in 2020, a position the company has held throughout the review period.
Following the downturn in 2020, sun care is set to return to positive current value and retail volume growth in 2021. As people will spend more time outside again and will be able to travel again on holiday to more sunny destinations sun care is expected to see a correction in demand.
Premium sun care products are expected to perform better that mass products in terms of current value growth over the forecast period. The Danish economy is expected to recover quickly after COVID-19 and remain strong through the forecast period.
Drugstores/parapharmacies are set to remain the leading channel for sun care over the forecast period. However, e-commerce will continue taking value share from other channels as Danish consumers have become accustomed to online shopping while under lockdown.
