In 2021 adult sun care registered a strong contraction in retail volume and current value terms. This was largely because of the lack of foreign tourists during the first quarter of the year due to the closure of the country’s borders, with seasonally being the most important factor behind sun care sales.
Despite supermarkets leading sales of sun care, the variety of products available in these stores is generally limited to mass brands such as Umbrella, Sundown or Nivea. However, in stores located in touristic cities the variety is often greater with brands such as Hawaiian Tropic being present.
Uruguay is the country with the highest incidence and mortality of skin cancer in Latin America. Uruguayans are however becoming more aware of the potential dangers of sun damage with this favouring sales of sun care products.
Urufarma is likely to continue leading sun care sales over the forecast period with its Dermaglós brand, which is imported from Argentina. However, there is fierce competition in the second, third and fourth places in the rankings with Johnson & Johnson de Uruguay SA (Sundown), Beiersdorf SA (Nivea Sun) and Roemmers SA (Umbrella) all vying for share, while Terry SA (Hawaiian Tropic) follows not far behind.
Despite consumers becoming more price sensitive because of rising inflation rates and prevailing economic uncertainty there is not expected to be a significant migration to cheaper alternatives when it comes to sun care products. Consumers generally prefer to save money in other categories whereas in sun care demand will likely continue to be driven by those products that are perceived to offer the greatest protection.
The interest and demand for natural, vegan and organic products within beauty and personal care in Uruguay is on the rise and sun care is no exception. For example, the Chemist Look is a domestic brand that was launched in 2016 and which has a wide portfolio of vegan sun care products made with natural and biotechnological ingredients that it sells online.
