Sun care was hard hit by the fallout of COVID-19 in 2020, with volume sales declining sharply and current value growth slowing dramatically from 2019. The category saw demand plummet as Pakistanis spent much more time at home than usual due to public health restrictions, remote working and fear of contracting the virus.
Sun care is by far the smallest of the main beauty and personal care categories in Pakistan. Moreover, it is almost exclusively represented by sun protection, with sales of other product types remaining negligible.
Unilever maintained its commanding lead in sun care in 2020. The company’s Pond's brand enjoys an early mover advantage, and also benefits from a high level of consumer loyalty thanks to its longstanding reputation for quality and strong presence in the skin care category.
Sun care should see sales rebound quickly in 2021, with the category projected to record healthy growth in volume and current value terms. As the threat from COVID-19 subsides and Pakistanis start spending more time outside the home, there will be a greater need for these products.
The growing participation of women in the workforce in Pakistan will continue to have a particularly positive influence on the development of sun care over the forecast period. In addition to enjoying greater financial independence, women who work outside the home tend to lead more active lifestyles that involve more time spent outdoors.
It is expected products offering higher SPF rates and better protection against UVA rays will continue to gain ground in sun care over the forecast period. Aside from the wider trend towards rising health-consciousness in Pakistan, interest in such products will be stimulated by the growing recognition that the risks sun exposure poses in terms of skin cancer and other conditions may be increasing as UV radiation intensifies in line with climate change.
