Sun care remained a very small category 2021, with only sun protection recording significant retail sales. These products are not popular or commonplace in Pakistan, not least as they are considered expensive items.
The demand for sun care remained heavily concentrated among middle-to-high-income consumers in major urban centres at the end of the review period. These consumers tend to be better informed of the health risks associated with exposure to the sun.
Unilever Pakistan extended its commanding lead in retail value share terms in sun care in 2021. The company’s Pond’s brand benefits from a high level of consumer loyalty, due to its early-mover advantage and long-standing reputation for quality, and a strong presence in skin care.
The outlook for the forecast period is more optimistic, with retail volume and value (constant 2021 prices) sales projected to grow strongly, albeit from a low base. The anticipated expansion of the category is underpinned by rising health awareness, particularly of the risks that sun exposure poses in terms of skin cancer.
Growing awareness of sun care products and moves away from traditional home remedies are set to aid the development of the category in the forecast period. In this vein, the growing participation of women in the workforce is expected to have a particularly positive influence.
Products offering higher SPF rates and better protection against UVA rays are expected to continue to gain ground in sun care over the forecast period. Aside from the wider health awareness trend in Pakistan, interest in such products is stimulated by the growing recognition of the risks sun exposure poses in terms of skin cancer, as well as the potential for other conditions as UV radiation intensifies in line with climate change.
