There was a sharp decline in sales of sun care during 2020 due to home seclusion, while 2021 only saw a slow recovery. This was mainly because at the beginning of the year Peru’s beaches and swimming pools remained closed, due to government restrictions.
Laboratorio Portugal SRL offers a wide portfolio of sun care products under its Bahía brand, including aftersun, with this being area previously controlled by imported brands. The brand also offers sun protection in different pack sizes and packaging formats such as, for example, affordable 10g sachets, 60g squeezable tubes, and 110ml or 1-litre plastic bottles, among others.
Only an estimated 20% of Peruvians use sun protection all year round which indicates that there is low awareness of the importance of using these products to protect against the sun’s harmful rays. Manufacturers are looking to address this in order to improve consumer health and help drive demand for their sun care products.
Sun care is projected to record strong growth in 2022, considering that outdoor activities during the summer months were allowed. Increased demand for sun protection is also linked to the fact that consumers are becoming more educated about the importance of protecting their skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
The cheapest available brand in sun care is often Bahía which is manufactured locally by Laboratorio Portugal SRL. This brand penetrated the market by using street vendors who sold its products in affordable sachets and small plastic bottles, with this helping to create brand awareness and promoting the use of sun protection among Peruvians from low-income households.
Currently, there is very low awareness about the use of sun protection to protect against blue light exposure. However, this is slowly changing, considering that people (including children) are spending an increasing amount of time in front of electronic screens, including PCs, tablets, smartphones and TVs.
