Although the potential dangers of overexposure to the sun’s rays have been well reported in Peru, having a tan is regarded as a status symbol in the country as it is associated with those who own a beach house or are members of a prestigious social club. These groups often visit the beach or sunbathe around a pool during the summer months and often do not use sun protection, or, if they do, they frequently either combine it with bronzers or use a low SPF version.
Peruvian women are paying greater attention to the textures of sun care products. They prefer products which are light and have an invisible texture, while products which are of thicker textures and leave the white marks on the skin are regarded as old-fashioned, even though they often provide higher levels of sun protection, regardless of the SPF level.
Mary Kay Perú introduced a new product in 2019 which not only provides sun protection against UVA and UVB rays with an SPF30 factor, but also moisturises the skin for 12 hours. The product is aimed at the growing segment of customers who prefer beauty products with multiple benefits, making it easier to take care of their facial skin.
Sales of sun care are now expected to grow by 1% in 2020 in 2019 constant value terms in light of the impact of COVID-19. This compares to an expected 2% rise forecast for 2020 during research conducted at the end of 2019 before the spread of COVID-19.
Premium sun protection recorded the strongest constant 2019 value growth in 2019. Despite the average unit prices of these items being more than double those of mass sun protection variants in Peru, value growth in 2019 was largely due to an increase in consumption rather than price rises.
After the lower constant 2019 value growth forecast for sun care for 2020, sales are expected to quickly bounce back, with stronger growth rates expected throughout the remainder of the forecast period than those envisaged in our research conducted at the end of 2019 before the spread of COVID-19. Growth will be driven by sun protection in both its mass and premium formats.
