New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC) is unlikely to lose its leading position in drinking milk products over the forecast period, not least as each of its two closest competitors currently generate less than 50% of its value sales. Nonetheless, the company is expected to face greater competition as the pressure on the milk supply has led to price increases, making drinking milk products a more competitive category.
One of the unforeseen outcomes of the crisis in the supply of milk that was seen in Kenya towards either the review period is that many consumers were forced to resort to plant-based milk during periods when they were unable to find cow’s milk on retail shelves. As a consequence, many consumers have suddenly realise that they prefer plant-based milk, at least part of the time, and this is likely to contribute to the strong increases that are being seen in demand for plant-based milk among the population of Kenya.
E-commerce remains a very small retailing channel in Kenya despite the huge strides that the channel made in terms of its development in the country during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite e-commerce continuing to account for a very small proportion of overall sales in drinking milk products at the end of the review period, it is possible that the channel will register rapid growth during the forecast period as internet penetration continues to increase at a very dynamic rate in all parts of Kenya.
