Tunisia has experienced milk shortages since 2018 and, during 2020, and their impact was exacerbated by the COVID-19 lockdown which lasted for almost two months between March and May. However, the shortages in spring 2020 were not as acute as those of 2018 and the situation is, again, much better in 2021.
Prices in shelf stable milk are fixed by the government in Tunisia, therefore the sub-category offers limited opportunities for growth. In fact, shelf stable milk has reached maturity in Tunisia, with many households already consuming such products on a regular basis.
Société Tunisienne des Industries Alimentaires STIAL maintains its strong lead in drinking milk products in 2021, thanks to the success of its popular Délice brand. The domestic player and its brands enjoy a well-established placing in dairy, with high visibility and strong consumer loyalty and trust, alongside wide distribution and significant marketing efforts.
In addition to the challenges seen within the dairy industry, the event of COVID-19 added extra pressure due to export difficulties and the closure of hospitality and foodservice businesses, thus creating a significant decline in overall demand for milk and dairy products. This resulted in the accumulation of large stocks at the level of manufacturers and wholesalers, which is not ideal due to the fact that dairy products are prone to spoil after time.
As noted, cow’s milk in Tunisia has seen rapid increases in price, due to necessity enforced by the dairy crisis in the country. This is partially subsidised and its price at both the producer and the consumer levels are set by the Tunisian authorities.
Releasing the price of milk and allowing the market to self-regulate, depending on supply and demand, has been repeatedly requested by professionals but so far rejected by the authorities. Farmers continue to demand fair prices for their milk, which are sufficiently remunerative to enable them to live decently and take proper care of their livestock and farms.
