Following the disruptions of 2020, and the progressive return to out-of-home consumption in 2021-2022, drinking milk consumption patterns are set to continue to normalise – especially over the second half of the forecast period. By this token, overall sales of drinking milk are set to decline over the forecast period, in line with the long-standing trends observed before the pandemic.
Cow’s milk is by far the biggest of the drinking milk categories. However, given the category’s maturity, raising prices and increasing competition (especially from plant-based dairy), cow’s milk is set to perform negatively over the forecast period.
In the coming years, manufacturers are expected to focus their new product developments in milk alternatives, as the popularity of this category is likely to keep increasing. New ingredients will be introduced, but only to an extent as Swiss consumers tend to be very attentive to the origin of product ingredients.
