The sluggish retail volume growth that characterised rice, pasta and noodles sales over the recent years has temporarily spiked in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, with the largest category pasta leading the acceleration. Retail sales have mainly benefited from a sharp decline in footfall at foodservice outlets, many of which were closed between late March and mid-May, leading to stockpiling for home cooking.
Demand for dried pasta strengthened considerably between March and May 2020, with weekly sales up by as much as 170% against a comparable week in 2019 in modern grocery channels, according to food newspaper Lebensmittel Zeitung. This has caused manufacturers and retailers to experience supply chain difficulties.
Sales of rice, pasta and noodles are comfortably led, collectively, by private label, with Newlat the largest branded player, as it controls three of the ten largest dried pasta brands, Birkel, 3 Glocken and Buitoni. However, it lost ground slightly to the second-largest branded company Barilla in dried pasta in 2019 and 2020, with Barilla ramping up advertising campaigns and promotions, notably for the launch of its new range made from pulses.
