Surface care sees a boost from COVID-19 in 2020, due to consumers’ higher standards of home hygiene and frequency of cleaning. Multi-purpose cleaners, which is already the dominant and one of the fastest growing categories, sees heightened sales due to the fact many multi-purpose cleaners offer antibacterial properties, along with the fact that consumers seek to save on purchases during uncertain economic times.
Scouring agents is another very popular category in Uzbekistan, with continued strong growth seen in 2020. This is attributed to the local cuisine being high in fat content and, therefore, more intense products are needed to tackle the grease.
The Procter & Gamble Co maintains its lead by a narrow margin in surface care in 2020, despite losing shares to MirTechnoPolimer MChJ QK which is hot on its heels. The top players are followed by Unilever Group and Stupinskiy Khimicheskiy Zavod ZAO in fast succession, making competition strong between the leading four players.
Growth in surface care is expected to be lower in 2021, with a gradual decline across the forecast period. The majority of consumers will continue to be price-sensitive, with even weaker spending power due to the event of COVID-19.
2022 is expected to be the first year of coming back to the regular production developments in surface care. It is expected that the existing strongly performing categories, such as multi-purpose cleaners, scouring agents and bathroom cleaners will remain the major categories over the forecast period, with bathroom cleaners expected to show the strongest CAGR at the end of the forecast period.
Uzbekistan’s economy is not expected to grow above the global average until 2025, thus keeping consumer spending power low over the forecast period. Furthermore, it is expected that the majority of consumers will continue to be price-sensitive even after 2025, thus whilst surface care does have good growth potential, the consumer base remains low and thus keeps growth somewhat tempered.
