Nappies/diapers are the dominant product in this category; sales of disposable pants are relatively limited in volume terms. Nappies/diapers are present in a wide variety of position in terms of quality and prices, but the comparatively low birth rate and small family size means that consumers are less price sensitive and are, broadly speaking, happier to buy more premium products.
The nappies/diapers/pants category in Uruguay is extremely concentrated; Industria Papelera Uruguay Sociedad Anónima’s BabySec, Kimberly-Clark Uruguay SA’s Huggies and Sebamar SA’s Pampers brands generate almost all volume sales in 2021. The first two in particular dominate, and all three enjoy very high levels of brand recognition based on longstanding presence and strong distribution agreements with leading retailers and wholesalers.
Uruguay’s birth rate is set to continue falling over the forecast period, making the development of volume sales extremely tricky. Producers will therefore need to find ways of adding value to these products to justify higher pricing.
Unemployment in Uruguay in 2020 and 2021 rose to levels that have not been seen for 20 years. Although the country’s economy is expected to recover from its sharp contraction in 2020, the labour market will not recover as quickly.
E-commerce has strengthened in Uruguay as a result of the pandemic, driven by its convenience, safety and rising consumer trust in the channel. This trend will continue over the forecast period, and will be especially important to consumers of nappies/diapers.
