Nappies/diapers/pants continued to post strong double-digit value growth in all areas in 2019, although all product types were impacted by the typically low disposable incomes and purchasing power of Uzbekistani consumers. The total number of households in Uzbekistan continued to rise in 2019, as did the size of the female population aged 12-54-years-old.
New tax rules on imported products in Uzbekistan mean that consumers are free to import up to USD300 worth of products per day tax free. However, the opening up of Uzbekistan’s borders to the neighbouring countries of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan has also led to a rise in the illegal importing of nappy products from those countries.
The leading brands, Synergy Distribution’s Pampers Prima and Kimberly-Clark’s Huggies, enjoyed wide distribution reach and engaged in ongoing marketing activities in 2019. Synergy Distribution and Kimberly-Clark focused on lower-priced products in these brands’ ranges, with Pampers Prima for example imported from Turkey to keep costs low.
Sales of nappies/diapers/pants are now expected to grow by 3% in 2019 constant value terms in 2020 overall in light of the impact of COVID-19. This is unchanged from the 3% rise forecast in 2019 constant value terms in our 2020 edition of tissue and hygiene published in February 2020 (pre-COVID-19).
Since COVID-19 is expected to have little to no impact on nappies/diapers/pants overall, rates of growth across the different product types will continue in line with the trends already in place pre-COVID-19. Double-digit value growth is expected for nappies/diapers/pants through 2020 and over the forecast period, with standard nappies/diapers and new born nappies/diapers continuing to account for the highest sales.
Growth trends established pre-COVID-19 are forecast to largely remain intact over the forecast period, with double-digit value growth expected for the majority of product categories. A slowing of value growth for standard nappies/diapers is expected by the end of the forecast period, by which time new born nappies/diapers is expected to record the highest value sales.
