During the lockdown, Greek consumers have tended to experiment with new and bizarre flavours, but in the end they have returned to the ordinary choice, which is salt. In regard to the potato chips, the majority of Greeks tend to prefer the basic flavours – salt, oregano, barbecue and cheese.
Potato chips leads savoury snacks current value sales, and did so throughout the review period. Global potato chips brand Lay’s leads overall value sales of savoury snacks, with Greek flavour favourite salt and oregano remaining consistently in demand.
Despite the likelihood of a fifth consecutive year of declining value share, Tasty Foods (PepsiCo) is predicted to continue to lead savoury snacks in 2021, with its brand Lay’s being the best seller, followed by Ruffles, Tasty and Cheetos. Domestic player Chipita, which has recently invested in distribution, with the company entering more points of sale, will maintain third position in 2021, despite its focus on the impulse channel suffering from COVID-19 restrictions.
During the lockdown, not only have consumers continued eating savoury snacks, but there has emerged a new trend for larger packs that they can eat with those close to them. Greater numbers of larger products have already been placed on store shelves, usually accompanied by a relatively low price, which makes them particularly tempting.
Overall, savoury snacks are predicted to show excellent resilience to the financial repercussions of COVID-19, with year-on-year value sales growth expected throughout the forecast period. Health-focused options in particular will perform well, and regular innovation in this direction may shift purchases away from some less healthy options.
Perhaps counterintuitively to the healthy living trend, snacking is increasingly integrated into modern lifestyles. Indeed, tortilla chips, potato chips and other savoury snacks are predicted to show the strongest current value CAGRs over the forecast period as home snacking becomes more entrenched in Greece and consumers increasingly replace meal times with savoury snacks.
