PROSPECTS
Convenience and price continue to drive growth in 2018

The efforts of major players in savoury snacks in terms of innovation and new product development contributed to category growth in 2018. Convenience and health have become two key areas of innovation for manufacturers with players reformulating many of their products to create healthier varieties.

High unit prices account for strong value growth

Higher-priced items, such as other savoury snacks (biltong or dried meat) and nuts, seeds and trail mixes contributed to the inflated value growth in the category over the review period. Other savoury snacks in South Africa is comprised of biltong, meat which is salted and dried.

Informal trading significant in disruption of savoury snacks

Although supermarkets remained the largest retail channel in 2018, a large quantity of puffed snacks and crisps are re-sold by street vendors on street pavements, buses and trains. Products from companies such as Truda Foods, Frimax Foods and Champ Food, are only sold in wholesalers and therefore can then be sold in independent small grocers or by street hawkers/vendors.
