Savoury snacks saw increases in both retail current value and volume terms in 2019, and growth is expected to continue in the forecast period. Increases are expected due to the increasing variety of savoury snack options in the market, along with population growth, urbanisation and rising disposable incomes.
Economy and standard brands are expected to continue to be preferred by consumers in savoury snacks. Local brands which are competitively priced will continue to appeal to less affluent consumers who are trying to limit their spending.
The general rise of modern retailing in Cameroon is set to result in more savoury snacks being distributed through supermarkets. Rising affluence and urbanisation are encouraging increasing numbers of Cameroonians to shop in supermarkets, and this means that the channel is likely to increasingly steal share from independent small grocers and other grocery retailers during the forecast period.
In 2019, Pringles from Kellogg Co maintained its lead in potato chips, and thus within overall savoury snacks, in spite of import and distribution setbacks. Since the liquidation of the main Pringles importer, UNIPAL Cameroon, in 2016, Pringles has had to work harder to remain the leading savoury snacks brand.
The competitive environment in savoury snacks remains highly fragmented, and private label presence is strong. Private label lines enjoy good volume and value sales in urban areas in Cameroon, with retailers such as Carrefour and Casino recording high sales for their private label lines in their supermarket chains.
Quality is important to consumers in Cameroon, particularly in categories such as potato chips and pretzels. NGM International’s Broli brand is struggling to increase its sales in the country, mainly due to the negative consumer perception of its potato chips brand.
