Savoury snacks will see healthy retail value sales growth during 2021. With COVID-19 lockdown restrictions being gradually lifted during the year, there are opposing dynamics in the savoury snacks category due to different consumption occasions.
The entry of new savoury snacks in Ukraine at the end of the review period which carry a health positioning are likely to disrupt the category with their use of more natural ingredients. For instance, RyabChick from the poultry manufacturer Nasha Ryaba is a chicken snack launched in 2020, similar to chips but made from chicken fillet, it uses less salt and dries at a higher temperature.
Frito-Lay Co will further strengthen its leadership of savoury snacks going into 2021, supported by global band owner PepsiCo Inc and its product portfolio which includes the popular Lay's potato chips, and Hrusteam (vegetable, pulse and bread chips). Frito-Lay benefits from PepsiCo’s strong investment in marketing materials which are prominently displayed in large supermarkets and hypermarkets, keeping them top of mind amongst consumers including backlighting, digital displays with the brand name positioned above its entire savoury snacks area and strong shelf positioning.
Savoury snacks is expected to see robust constant retail value sales growth during the forecast period. Additionally, it is likely that Ukrainians will shift spending from nuts, seeds and trail mixes to potato chips and bread chips as consumers are price sensitive and prices of seeds and peanuts are dependent on the seed and nut harvest as well as currency fluctuations which tend to make these savoury snacks expensive.
Larger pack sizes are trending in potato and bread chips as well as in puffed snacks. These larger packs are family focused and with the home seclusion consumption trend extensions of these pack sizes were introduced at the end of the review period, for example “movie packs” by Lay’s, mega pack by Flint, big-big pack from Chipsters, Pringles’ XXL and Hrusters’ XXL pack.
Value for money remains important to consumers as witnessed by ATB-Market’s savoury snacks’ private label gaining value share rapidly in 2021 due to the chain’s expansion and aggressive promotions in the nuts, seeds & trail mixes category. Furthermore, its Svoya Liniya line is ranked third in potato chips and is ranked fifth in vegetable, pulse and bread chips with considerable growth potential in bread chips.
